The best mount for Tobacco Pipes is the Spider Mount, which is an adaptable, configurable, and customizable mount designed to hold artifacts from below. It is equipped with 4 shapable arms that provide a stable foundation for any small art display. For Tobacco Pipe displays, Spider Mounts are best suited to being shaped around the bowl and shank. Overall, the mounts come it two parts: a firm acrylic base, and a shapeable metal armature.

Bases:

Spider Mount bases are cast acrylic and are available in semi-flat black and clear. Bases are also available in a variety of sizes for maximum customization, although they all are ½” in thickness. A wider base means additional stability and is highly recommended when a large armature is being used.

Armatures:

The arms are made of 1/16” softened metal as to be easily shaped, cut, and bent. The upright post is made of 1/8” metal, which is more rigid and provides additional structural stability. The metal display armature is removable from the base so that it can be more easily formed to the desired shape (e.g bending the main post it in a vice or cutting it with Lineman’s pliers or a hacksaw). For wall-mounted displays, the armature may also be ordered without the base. A helpful instructional video for shaping armatures can be found here.

*Note: Avoid putting pressure on soldered joints when bending. Also, when modifying the post, be sure to remove it from the base very carefully to minimize damage risk to the base as that specific junction can be very tight

Sometimes a custom size fulfills your needs more effectively than a standard one. You might want a larger or smaller armature, or maybe you need a stronger or more delicate upright. Whatever your needs may be, we can customize or custom build an armature for you.

Common tools for armature adjustment include:

• Needle nose pliers in a variety of sizes (for tight bends in the “arms” of the mount)

• Large wire snippers (for trimming the arms to length)

• Large pliers, such as Linesman's Pliers (for all-purpose bending and cutting uses)

• A hacksaw (for shortening the central post)

• Flat black touch-up paint (for the base or armature after modifications to them)

• Shrink Tube (to pad artwork from the armature if necessary)

• A heat source, such as a heat gun (for use of Shrink Tube)
